When legalized marijuana sales began in Colorado in 2014, more than just political controversies got lit. Amid the new retail outlets for personal use sales, edible cannabis product start-ups and high-tech grow-ops, the floundering newspaper business also sparked up an idea. The Denver Post hired the first-ever major daily marijuana editor, Ricardo Baca. Charged with managing a team of weed writers and generating news stories, Baca navigated a new area of mainstream reporting, complete with its own ethical and editorial issues. From hiring pot reviewers to a “high” mommy blogger, Baca had to keep the novelty alive while attracting and retaining a new readership. His beat signaled an official alliance between a financially declining yet highbrow cultural institution and an anti-establishment counter-culture, both of which were now fixed on profits. With slick visuals, a pumping soundtrack and a charismatic character, Rolling Papers invites audiences to sit back and breathe in a new era of “canni-business.”
